What you do with it
How to use this at renewal
The benchmark tells you where you stand. These five steps turn it into a renewal conversation, and a record of it.
- 1
4–5 months out
Get the full disclosure in writing
Send the disclosure-request letter so every form of your broker's pay, including commissions and bonuses paid by carriers, is on paper before any quotes arrive.
Uses: Disclosure-request letter
- 2
3–4 months out
Decide what you want changed
Take the benchmark to your committee: where the plan sits, what the gap is worth, and which benefit lines run above peers. Agree on your asks before the broker presents.
Uses: Benchmark report and Talking Points
- 3
At the renewal meeting
Ask the questions, and get answers in writing
Start with the questions specific to your findings, then the standard set. A broker who is paid fairly can explain it plainly.
Uses: Renewal question set
- 4
If the answers fall short
Test the market
Issue the RFP outline to other firms, this cycle if time allows or for the next one. Often the credible option to go out to bid is what moves the number.
Uses: Broker RFP outline
- 5
When you decide
Put the decision on file
Record your own determination and the reasons for it, with the benchmark attached. Whatever you conclude, a dated record of how you decided is what shows a prudent process later.
Uses: Reasonable-compensation determination memo
Option B: Prepare for renewal
Renewal Readiness
Not a second PDF. A time-boxed renewal workspace that includes the Broker Compensation Benchmark Report, then adds the working tools your team uses until you sign. The complete product is priced by covered lives because renewal complexity scales with plan size. Confirm covered lives below (we prefill from your latest Form 5500 when we know your company) to see your exact price.
Already bought the $199 report? Your full $199 applies if you upgrade within 60 days.

Why does the report flag our dental line?
Your dental contract with Delta Dental of Ohio pays the broker 10.9% of premium. Comparable single-line dental contracts in your peer group have a median of 5.5%, so yours sits above the typical range. On $348,000 of dental premium, that is about $18,860 a year more than the peer-median rate would pay. It doesn't mean anything improper happened, since commission schedules vary, but it is a fair thing to ask about.
What should I ask our broker about it?
Three questions to start with. 1. What commission schedule applies to our dental contract, and does it change over time? 2. Does the carrier pay you any bonus or override tied to our business beyond that rate? 3. Would you consider a lower commission or a flat fee for dental at this renewal? Ask for the answers in writing so they can go in the plan file.
It explains your numbers and drafts your questions. It won't recommend a broker, and it doesn't sell anything.
One-time purchase. Full access for up to 4 months — enough to cover your renewal cycle from first quotes to signature.

Buying & access
Why would a plan sponsor expense this?+
Documenting a prudent process, including benchmarking what the plan pays its broker, is part of fiduciary governance. A dated, peer-based record belongs in the plan's file.
What's the difference between the Broker Compensation Benchmark Report and Renewal Readiness?+
Two different jobs. The Broker Compensation Benchmark Report ($199) delivers a committee-ready PDF you keep for the fiduciary file, plus 12 months of live company-profile access for that EIN. Renewal Readiness is a complete seasonal workspace with up to four months of access. It includes the report, then adds the Fee Modeler, CAA gap-check, Ask Unbrokered, peer comparisons, Talking Points, RFP template, disclosure-request letter, and renewal question set.
What happens when my access window ends?+
Your downloaded report PDF and invoice are yours to retain. We also keep them available in My Reports while your account is maintained, subject to our retention policy. Live unlocks end on the access end date shown on your invoice. Renew the same product, or buy Renewal Readiness in-season, to restore live access.
Where do I get an invoice for my records?+
Every paid purchase generates an Unbrokered-branded invoice PDF. We email it after checkout and store it in My Reports so you can download a copy anytime.
Does my $199 count if I upgrade?+
Yes, within 60 days, automatically at checkout. It stacks with the $500 CAA disclosure credit if you have both.
What do I get for uploading a CAA disclosure?+
Upload your CAA compensation disclosure and our team reviews the document, usually within one business day. When the review is complete, you get your Renewal Talking Points free, plus $500 off Renewal Readiness if you purchase within 90 days. Document review does not verify your identity or legal authority, and it does not grant the full paid workspace for free.
What's in the Renewal Prep Kit?+
A downloadable bundle generated from your own numbers: Broker Compensation Benchmark Report, Fee Modeler scenario summary, renewal questions, a broker RFP template, and a pre-written ERISA 408(b)(2)(B) disclosure request letter pre-filled with your broker and plan details. Included with the $199 Benchmark Report for that EIN and with Renewal Readiness.
Data & method
How does this relate to the CAA §202 disclosure?+
The CAA requires covered brokers and consultants to disclose qualifying compensation. Unbrokered shows where that number falls versus a filing-based peer group. The disclosure is an input; you and your advisors make the reasonableness determination.
Do I have to share my broker data?+
No. Sharing is one way into free Benchmark Access, but every paid product grants access without any submission.
Where does the data come from?+
Broker benchmarks come only from public U.S. Department of Labor Form 5500 Schedule A and Schedule C filings. A user submission may supply the user's current compensation figure, but it never enters broker peer benchmark cells. Every displayed benchmark carries its sample size and source.
What if there aren't enough plans like mine yet?+
For broker benchmarks, we never display a peer cut until at least 10 employers (n≥10) qualify. If your industry or state is thin, we automatically broaden the scope, moving state to region to national or dropping industry, and footnote exactly which peer group we used.
The chats
Where is Ask Unbrokered (the chat)?+
Ask Unbrokered is included with a Company Report (20 questions / month) and with Renewal Readiness (your renewal analyst). It answers plain-English questions about your own numbers and filings; it does not recommend a broker.
I have a question about my report. Who do I ask?+
Ask Unbrokered, from your dashboard or the button on your report page. It knows your filings and your benchmark and answers right away. Email support for billing or access problems.
What's the difference between the two chats?+
Report Q&A explains your report. Renewal Readiness helps you build and run the plan: a game plan, targets, drafted asks, and progress tracking. Insight Pass has a separate research chat over public filings only.
Is Ask Unbrokered advice?+
No. It explains filings, benchmarks, and options. Decisions are yours, and legal questions go to your counsel.
Who answers?+
An AI assistant built and supervised by Unbrokered. Conversations are not saved unless you choose to keep a draft, a game plan, or a support note.
Independence
Is this legal advice or a compliance guarantee?+
No. Unbrokered provides data and documentation. It doesn't provide legal advice, sell insurance, or act as your fiduciary. Whether compensation is reasonable is your determination, made with your own advisors; we give you the peer benchmark and the record to support it.
Who pays Unbrokered?+
Only our customers — employers and independent professionals who buy reports or time-limited research access. We accept no commissions, referral fees, sponsorships, or paid placement from brokers, carriers, PBMs, or vendors, and we don't sell leads or advertising. Anyone can buy the same research access at the same public price; buying it never changes a number. Benchmark math is identical for every plan and verifiable against the underlying government filings.
Does Unbrokered sell insurance?+
No. Unbrokered is an independent benchmarking platform. We don't sell insurance or earn broker commissions. Our only revenue is paid reports and research access, so our incentive is to give you the most accurate picture possible.
